Did you know?

Cissus sicyoides is an extremely variable species, with significant differences in leaf shape and structure between individual plants.

Cissus sicyoides is a highly variable species of the genus Cissus, distributed from the southeastern United States through Central America to South America and the Caribbean, including the Antilles. It grows mainly in tropical regions at low elevations, often close to sea level. In traditional folk medicine, this species has been used for stomach ailments, fevers, and as an antiepileptic, and the root bark was chewed in some regions to strengthen teeth. The species is well known for its pronounced variability, especially in leaf shape.

The plant produces soft green leaves and thin branches that appear only during periods of active growth when sufficient water is available. During dormancy, usually from autumn to spring, the above-ground parts often dry back. A characteristic feature is the thickened trunk, which serves as a storage organ, along with the formation of aerial roots. In nature, Cissus sicyoides can reach lengths of several metres.

The flowers are inconspicuous and coloured greenish white, white, or pale yellow.

Cissus sicyoides is suitable for cultivation in a bright position with regular watering during the growing season and significantly reduced watering during the dormant period. The plant responds well to pinching, which helps maintain a more compact shape. Thanks to its interesting trunk and aerial roots, it is an excellent choice for growers looking for an unusual and easily shaped tropical plant.
