Partial shade is ideal for this plant, but it can also tolerate sunny locations.

Always water only after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

Temperatures should not fall below 4.4 °C. The plant is not frost-resistant.

Did you know?

It forms thick underground tubers that serve as water reservoirs.

Ceropegia barklyi originates from the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. In botanical literature it is also listed as Ceropegia africana subsp. barklyi, an accepted name used since 1985.

The leaves have a green base colour, often with attractive silver markings on the upper surface, while the underside is usually purple. In strong light, the green tones may shift into pinkish-purple shades. The leaves are lance-shaped, sharply pointed, reaching up to about 4 cm in length and around 2 cm in width. In winter, the foliage may naturally drop. The plant produces climbing stems up to about 1 metre long from an underground tuber, and it may also form small side tubers and swollen nodes.

The flowers have the typical “candle-like” shape characteristic of the genus Ceropegia. They are pink with dark hairs and usually appear in summer.

Ceropegia barklyi is a climbing or trailing plant suitable for hanging pots or for training on a support. It grows best in a bright position with well-draining soil, watered only several days after the substrate has completely dried out. Light fertilising is possible during the growing season. This species is especially valued for its silver-patterned leaves and its unusual flowers.
