Can tolerate -6.7 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
Although the dense white hairs help protect the plant from intense sunlight, grow it in the brightest possible location to maintain compact, healthy growth.
Austrocylindropuntia vestita cristata is the crested form of Austrocylindropuntia vestita, a species native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. Unlike the normal form, it develops unusual fan-shaped crests, making it a highly sought-after collector's cactus.
The plant forms flattened, undulating stems created by the fusion of multiple growing points. The stems are light to greyish green and densely covered with fine white hairs, giving the plant a soft, almost velvety appearance. As it matures, it develops larger, intricately shaped crests, with each specimen displaying a unique growth pattern.
Flowering is uncommon in crested plants. When it does occur, the plant produces small red to pinkish-red flowers along the edges of the stems.
Austrocylindropuntia vestita cristata prefers a very bright position, ideally with direct sunlight, a well-draining mineral substrate, and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, it should be kept almost completely dry. Its unusual crested growth and dense white hair-like covering make it a striking centerpiece in any succulent or cactus collection.
