Ideally, place in partial shade.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

It can withstand temperatures as low as -6.7 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

TIP for you:

Older plants may develop a short stem covered with dry leaves, which is completely natural.

Aloe striata, also known as Coral Aloe, originates from South Africa and grows on rocky slopes in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. It is also listed under the synonyms Aloe albocincta, Aloe hanburiana, and Aloe paniculata. This species is especially valued for its smooth leaves with brightly coloured margins.

The leaves are grey-green to slightly reddish, with characteristic pale pink to almost red edges and often a subtle longitudinal striping. They are fleshy, lance-shaped, and can reach up to about 50 cm in length and around 20 cm in width. The plant forms stemless or shortly stemmed rosettes, which may grow solitary or sometimes produce several offsets. In older specimens, a short stem with persistent dry leaves may develop, and the overall length can reach up to about 1 metre.

The flowers are coral red and appear during winter in dense clusters on richly branched inflorescences. The flower stalks can grow up to about 1 metre tall and are one of the most striking features of this species.

Aloe striata is an easy, rather slow-growing aloe that prefers a very bright position and well-draining soil. Light feeding with a cactus and succulent fertiliser is possible. When watering, it is important that water does not remain trapped in the rosette for long. If you are looking for an aloe with smooth foliage and spectacular coral-red winter blooms, Aloe striata is one of the finest choices for a collection.
