Did you know?

In Aloe peglerae, young, newly growing leaves have conspicuous whitish spines, which gradually change to the typical reddish-brown color with age.

Aloe peglerae is a species of aloe that naturally grows in sunny, well-drained habitats at higher elevations on rocky mountains and hills, especially on exposed rocky north-facing slopes. It is also known as Fez Aloe, Red-hot Poker Aloe, or Turk’s Cap, and is very similar in appearance to Aloe humilis. It is a succulent adapted to dry, open conditions.

The plant grows low to the ground and forms a single rosette without a noticeable stem, or with a very short stem. It typically has around 30 leaves that are thick, fleshy, and very rigid. The leaves curve inward and bear spines that are whitish on younger parts, while older leaves develop reddish-brown spines. The overall habit remains compact and low-growing.

The flowers are dull red and appear on a flower stalk during winter, when the plant is especially striking. The flowers are pollinated by birds, bees, and also by wind.

For cultivation, a very well-draining substrate and a bright position with ample light are suitable. Watering should be moderate, and during prolonged dry periods the leaves tend to curl inward. This succulent works well as a houseplant for growers looking for a compact aloe with a firm growth habit and distinctive winter flowering.
