Agave potatorum Ouhi-Raijin variegata
The plant likes partial shade, but can also tolerate sunny locations.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter. It is better to water less than too much.
It can withstand temperatures as low as -3 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
In winter, watering once every 1–2 months is sufficient.
Agave potatorum Ouhi-Raijin variegata is a variegated cultivar of Agave potatorum that appears in cultivation under several names, such as Agave istmensis compacta mediopicta or the Japanese name Agave isthmensis Ouhi Raijin Shirifukurin. The species originates from semi-desert regions of Mexico.
The leaves are smooth and grey-green, with a prominent broad creamy white stripe running through the center. The leaf margins may show a subtle seasonal reddish tint, especially near the tip. Along the edges are short, slightly flexible spines of a dull grey-brown to chestnut color, and the leaves end in a short terminal spine. The rosettes are very compact, reaching approximately 7 cm in height and about 10 cm in width. As the mother plant matures, offsets are produced.
Flowering in this variegated form is not commonly observed, and the plant is grown mainly for its form and striking leaf variegation.
Agave potatorum Ouhi-Raijin variegata is a slow-growing, small succulent suitable for container cultivation. It grows best in a porous, well-draining substrate with good drainage. In winter, very limited watering is sufficient, approximately once a month, and overwintering in a warmer room is recommended. Fertilizing is possible but not necessary. If you are looking for a small, strongly variegated agave, this cultivar is well worth attention.
