Aeonium Superbang
A bright location with plenty of filtered to direct light. Protect it from harsh midday sun during summer.
During active growth, water after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering during summer dormancy and winter, depending on the plant's condition.
Normal room temperatures are ideal. Protect the plant from frost and prolonged exposure to cold.
Aeonium Superbang can change its appearance so dramatically throughout the year that it may look like two different plants. Its colouring is influenced not only by light levels, but also by the season and temperature.
Aeonium Superbang is a vividly coloured succulent cultivar from the Crassulaceae family. Its origins are associated with Asian horticulture and it is thought to have arisen as a colourful mutation of Aeonium Velour. Unlike many other succulents, it stands out mainly for its striking leaf patterns and intense colours, which change noticeably throughout the year.
The plant develops branching stems topped with dense rosettes of fleshy, slightly elongated leaves. Its greatest attraction is the dramatic contrast of colours. During periods of lower light, the leaves are usually fresh lime green with pale cream to yellow margins. As light levels increase, the centres gradually deepen to dark burgundy and almost black, while the lighter edges turn vivid red. The result is a striking two-tone pattern that can look almost unbelievable.
Flowering is rare under typical growing conditions. Mature rosettes may occasionally produce flower stalks bearing small, star-shaped yellow flowers.
Aeonium Superbang needs plenty of bright light to maintain compact growth and develop its intense colouring. During summer, protect it from prolonged exposure to harsh midday and afternoon sun, which may damage the leaves or cause the colours to fade. Grow it in a well-draining substrate and water according to its growth cycle, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During hot summer weather, the plant may enter dormancy, when watering should be reduced considerably. In winter, move it to a bright, frost-free location. Its changing colours and branching rosettes make it an eye-catching addition to any succulent collection.
