Aeonium barbatum
The plant likes sunny locations, but can also tolerate partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can withstand temperatures down to -6.7 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
Provide plenty of light and cooler winter temperatures, and the rosettes will remain compact.
Aeonium barbatum is probably a hybrid resulting from a cross between Aeonium spathulatum and Aeonium simsii. In cultivation, it is valued for its smaller size and distinctive leaf patterning, which develops best under good light conditions.
The plant forms smaller rosettes that can reach a diameter of up to about 10 cm. Overall, it grows to around 15 cm in height and approximately 30 cm in width, with stems branching horizontally near the base. The leaves are green on the upper surface and lighter underneath, with visible linear glands, and the margins are finely ciliate. In full sun, a pronounced central stripe appears on the leaves, giving the plant stronger visual contrast.
In spring, flower heads composed of golden-yellow flowers appear. The inflorescences grow on upright stems that can reach about 15 cm in height and rise clearly above the leaf rosettes.
This succulent requires a bright position, a well-draining substrate, and moderate watering with thorough drying between waterings. With sufficient light, it maintains a compact habit and strong leaf coloration, making it a suitable choice for container growing without demanding care.
