How to grow cold-hardy

Location

Rock plants or Alpines are easy to grow. They are best planted outdoors in a rockery. They can also be grown in portable pots, jardinieres, bowls etc. The best place is in full sun or moderate partial shade.

Substrate

The choice of a suitable substrate is very important. It should be well permeable. You can mix it yourself, just use ordinary soil mixed 1:1 with coarse sand.

Substrate

Watering

In the growing season rock plants like slightly moist soil, but well permeable not to hold too much water. Water either in the morning or in the evening, e.g. 1 to 3 times a week.

Fertilizing

Rock plant do not require fertilisation. However, some species can be fertilised to speed up their growth (see the websites of specific species for information on fertilisation).

Care over winter

A big risk can be from frost or very low temperatures. The plants can be protected by spreading the branches evenly in a thin layer. Rock plant also do not like too much moisture combined with cold. It is a good idea to check how low temperatures the plant can tolerate before planting it in a rockery. Delicate specimens should be grown in portable pots and for the winter moved to a place where rain and snow will not fall on them.

Propagation

Propagation can be done by collected seeds, cuttings or division of clumps.
